Before you start a new year at Queens’, it is important to sit down and figure out how much money you are going to need.

The UCAS webiste lists some really useful advice on budgeting, and there are lots of quick and easy budget calculatorsavailable online.

Thinking about this before Michaelmas begins can give you some piece of mind and reduce unnecessary stress during term time.

An abundance of libraries in Cambridge means very few people spend money on books, so you probably don’t need to factor this into your budget. If you really can’t find the book you need, Queens’ library take requests and can get hold of new books for your course in as little as 24 hours.

Loans and Grants

EU and Home students are eligible to receive financial support from the government which helps cover the costs of university fees and the cost of living (maintenance grant).

Loans are not means tested, and are available to everyone. Grants are means tested, which means you need to supply information about your household income to receive them.

You can use this online calculator to figure out roughly how much you can receive.

Cambridge Bursary Scheme (University level funding)

Any full time undergraduate who receives a means tested maintenance grant (see loans and grants) is eligible for additional funding from the Cambridge Bursary Scheme. If you are eligible, we strongly recommend you apply here!

Financial Hardship (College level funding)

Queens’ is committed to making sure no student’s ability to study is compromised, and so funds are set aside to help people in financial difficulty. If finances are getting in the way of your studies for any reason, please get in touch with your tutor right away before completing this form.

If you don’t feel comfortable contacting your tutor and would like some support or general advice, get in touch with the welfare team.

Travel grants

Grants of up to £350 are available for students travelling abroad. You can apply throughout the year, but your application will be considered at specific times so it is worth checking this out and making sure you apply well before you intend to travel.

For more info, go the Financial Office in the Essex Building, which is open 8 am – 4 pm, Mon-Fri.
